Congressional Democrats have passed a plan in the House that extends the Bush tax cuts on income below $250,000 for married couples (and $200,000 for single filers.) The House Democrats' plan extends most, but not all, stimulus provisions included in Obama's budget, leaving out the Making Work Pay credit, the American Opportunity education credit, and the 45% EITC phase-in rate for low-income families with three or more children. In this calculator, we assume that an "AMT patch" would be in effect for 2011, raising the exemption level of the alternative minimum tax (AMT) so that it would apply to fewer taxpayers.
As Congressional Republicans are the only group so far to have proposed specific numbers for a 2011 AMT patch, we use those numbers in this scenario, and the Democrats' AMT patch is likely to be very similar.
